- In a Utopian Japan set in the distant future, a homeless Gatsu Fan with a crippling inferiority complex struggles to survive in the castaway slums, living in alleyways and feeding off trash.
- One day, as he is going about his life, a gargantuan creature arises from the sea - a mutated, polluted being - and it almost destroys him.
- The Gatsu Fan, desperate to prove himself, embarks on a journey to defeat this monster, learning about it and planning a great attack.
- However, when the Gatsu Fan attacks the monster, none of it works; he is utterly defeated, as he has not yet found himself - his inner voice - and thus cannot overcome the creature.
- Just as the monster is about to eat him, he realizes his fault and is able to defeat it.
- The world takes no notice and he ends up still the underdog - but he himself has grown immensely.
